Sound and Dance Movement Therapy
What is Dance Movement Therapy?
Dance movement therapy is a creative arts psychotherapy that utilizes movement and dance to promote emotional, social, cognitive and physical integration. It can increase strength and flexibility as well as releases muscle tension.
It's roots are from indigenous forms of healing practices where dance, singing and plants were used to come together as a community to heal, re- connect and celebrate life transitions.
Dance therapy uses movement and non- verbal communication in addition to talk therapy.
There are many areas dance therapy works in from neurodiverse children, eating disorders, dementia, youth development to mental health issues. It is a field that sees the unique- ness in each person, taking on a person- centered approach to wellbeing.
Sakoya offerings can be a 1 on 1 session or a group workshop/ series. In these sessions we will work with what arises on the day. This could look like re- centering with breath, therapeutic movement tools to support regulation or unpacking themes in life to integrate. Music and Props can also be used to explore weight, space, boundaries, edges and to connect with the therapist or others in the group. Self- resourcing and Nature connection are foundational practices in working together.
